Leadership & Community
At the Alpena Institute of Massage, leadership isn’t taught in a lecture — it’s lived through action, collaboration, and community service. Inspired by the philosophy of Ubuntu (“I am because we are”), our students participate in a unique, hands-on project that blends business education with teamwork, creativity, and local impact.
Each class creates its own student-led community event, which functions as their “business” for the duration of the project. Together, students:
- Choose the focus of the event
- Develop a name and brand identity
- Design marketing materials
- Build a business plan
- Raise the capital needed to launch
- Work as a team, using each person’s strengths
- Provide chair or table massage services at the event
- Select a nonprofit organization to receive the proceeds
This project teaches students that running a successful business is more than technical skill — it’s about connection, generosity, collaboration, and service. By giving back to their community, students learn that you do not simply open your doors and wait for people to come. You must first show up for your community.
The Ubuntu Project helps our students develop confidence, leadership, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a deep understanding of what it means to be a trusted professional in the wellness industry.
